RELIABILITY ENGINEERING AND MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT
(Industrial Engineering and Management)
Time: 3 hours       Max. Marks: 60

Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks

– – –
1.a) What is the relevance of Weibull Model in the context of hazard
model?
b) In an accelerated test programme concerning the survival rate of
electronic equipment under severe environmental conditions, the
results show that the time to failure obeys a normal probability law
with µ = 2 and σ = 2.  Calculate the reliability of the equipment for
atleast 3 hours.

2. A critical measuring instrument consists of two subsystems
connected in series.  Subsystems A and B have reliabilities 0.90
and 0.92 respectively for a certain operating time.  It is necessary
that the reliability of the instrument be raised to a minimum value
of 0.917 by using parallel subsystems of A alone.  Determine how
many units of A should be used with one B to get a minimum
reliability value of 0.98.  What is the actual reliability value
obtained?

3. It is decided to install a fire sensor in a section of chemical
complex to ring an alarm in case of fire.  The reliability of the
primitive sensor to activate the alarm in case of fire is 0.7.  The
probability that the sensor will not activate the alarm in case of no
fire is 0.95.  How many sensors should be installed to maximize
reliability that the message is sent at the right time?  What is the
maximum reliability value?

4.a) Define (i)  maintainability  (ii)  MTTR and  (iii)  MTBF.
b) Explain the terms Availability, Inherent Availability, Achieved
Availability and Operational Availability.

5.a) What is predictive maintenance?
b) What are the considerations to be taken into account in balancing
maintenance costs against the benefit?

6. What aspects have to be taken into account when organizing for
Maintenance Management function?  What are the relevant records
to be maintained?

7.a) What are the classifications of maintenance spare parts?  Explain
with examples.
b) Explain the appropriate selective inventory control technique for
spare parts.

8. Explain the working of MIS with its requirement for effective
Maintenance Management.
