1. “The factors of material selection will influence both design and
manufacture”. Justify this statement by considering each factor.
What is the need for new materials in high technology domains?

2. Discuss the importance of plasticity of materials in manufacture.
How does plasticity and wear considerations influence design?

3. Enumerate design rules and guidelines applicable to dimensional
tolerances of various machining processes. What is design for
machining?

4. What are general design considerations for casting processes with
respect to
(a) economical moulding (b) solidification
(c) surface integrity (e) fettling and cleaning

5. Assume a machine component generally made by casting process
is changed to make by welding fabrication. Make your own
example and suggest what redesign of component is needed for
economical welding. Suggest design changes.

6. Elaborate various design guidelines for various extrusion
processes.

7.a) What factors are to be duly considered for press worked sheet
metal components?
b) What allowances and tolerances are desired for sheet metal part
design?

8. Enumerate the design considerations for infection moulding.
